  • AstraZeneca political contributions

Pharmaceutical companies are a critical part of the US health care system and it is essential that we participate, actively and responsibly, in the political process to help ensure sound public policy on health care issues.

The success of these efforts depends to a great extent on our involvement at the national, state, and local level. Together, we can build a stronger health care system in which more people are diagnosed and treated, fewer people are hospitalized, and medicines are properly seen as an investment, not a cost.

AstraZeneca Political Action Committee (AZPAC)

AstraZeneca’s Political Action Committee (PAC) provides eligible U.S. employees an opportunity to support federal and state candidates who share AstraZeneca’s perspective on the public policies that impact our business and the patients we serve.

AZ PAC is funded solely by voluntary employee contributions. AZ PAC’s Board of Directors, comprised of representatives from different units of AstraZeneca, directs AZ PAC’s communications, contributions and membership programs. The AZ PAC Board determines which candidates will receive support, without regard to their party affiliation, based on the candidate's understanding and support of issues important to AstraZeneca and the biopharmaceutical industry, the candidate's membership on key committees that consider legislation vital to our business, the location of AstraZeneca employees and/or facilities in the candidate’s state or district, the candidate’s leadership position or potential for leadership, and the candidate’s financial need and potential for winning.

AZ PAC is registered with the Federal Election Commission (FEC) (www.fec.gov) and complies with all regulatory requirements, including stringent reporting and record keeping and strict contribution limits. AZ PAC also provides required reports to the appropriate state agencies.

Federal Lobbying

As a leader in the healthcare industry, AstraZeneca is committed to sharing its knowledge and experience with government officials and policy makers as they address healthcare-related issues that impact patients and caregivers.

AstraZeneca has strict internal policies that oversee interactions between AstraZeneca employees and government officials.  Federal and state laws and regulations also govern lobbying activities.

AstraZeneca and other entities are required to register lobbyists with and report federal lobbying activities to the Clerk of the House of Representatives and the Secretary of the Senate.  These quarterly reports are available below.  These reported expenditures include the portion of AstraZeneca’s trade associations dues used for political purposes. AstraZeneca separately discloses this expenditure for major trade associations on this webpage.

Political Expenditures by Certain Trade Associations

AstraZeneca is a member of various industry and trade groups. These groups represent the biopharmaceutical industry with governments and other stakeholders, defending and supporting public policies that are consistent with AstraZeneca’s health care principles. While AstraZeneca may not always share the specific views of the industry and trade groups to which we belong, we continue to value our memberships in these organizations as they work to gain consensus on policy issues, when possible, amongst members to present a broader industry perspective.

In some trade associations, members’ dues and other payments are used for political purposes. Consistent with our voluntary disclosure of corporate political contributions, AstraZeneca has requested that major, US-based trade associations receiving total payments of more than $50,000 in a given year, identify the portion of AstraZeneca dues that are used for non-deductible political expenditures.
